Extended Family’s mission is simple yet powerful, “To offer help and inspire hope.” Every day, families across the country face the emotional, mental, and physical challenges of having a loved one incarcerated. Extended Family is committed to providing the support these families need to cope, heal, and build better futures.
Our programs are designed to reduce stress, ease emotional burdens, and empower families to make healthy lifestyle choices. We serve all family members – children, adults, and returning citizens – with targeted resources and proven programs that address the unique challenges of incarceration.
Extended Family offers adult family members a comprehensive online Resource Database, “Helpful Hints” for navigating life with an incarcerated loved one, and personalized support from staff members who understand these experiences firsthand.
We offer two programs for children. Extended Family for Kids is an evidence-based curriculum for children ages 5-18. This nine-lesson series helps children understand that having a loved one incarcerated is not their fault and provides specific tools to better manage their emotions and stress to make better choices for themselves. Extended Family Leadership Academy helps students in grades 7-12 succeed in school and plan for their futures by focusing on job readiness, health, and effective communication.
Extended Success for Life is a mentoring initiative for men reentering Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun, and DeKalb counties. Participants complete a 20-week program titled Dream, Learn, Live which teaches them to set personal goals and successfully reintegrate into their communities.
