Extended Success for Life (ESL) is a transformative twenty-week reentry program designed to support men leaving prison, referred to as Returning Citizens (RCs), as they rebuild their lives, reconnect with their families, and reenter their communities. ESL offers a comprehensive series of individualized lessons rooted in the three-part approach: Dream, Learn, and Live.
The program is led by ESL Coordinator Jerry Clemons, who brings a powerful personal perspective to his role. A former inmate who spent six years in an Alabama state penitentiary, Jerry has successfully remained home and active in the community since 2009. His experience informs and inspires his work with RCs every day.
Each participant in the ESL program begins to Dream by identifying and setting realistic, meaningful goals. These initial sessions focus on helping RCs imagine a new future built on purpose and personal growth. From there, Jerry customizes each participant’s lesson plan to align with their unique needs and aspirations.
The emphasis in the second phase of ESL is for the RC to Learn the practical and emotional skills needed to achieve his goals. Through interactive lessons and activities, participants uncover their own strengths, develop new talents, and build coping strategies to manage stress and emotions in productive, non-destructive ways.
In the final stage, Live, participants are challenged to apply what they’ve learned. They receive individualized support, tools, and encouragement to put their plans into action. This vital step focuses on accountability, resilience, and real-world success, helping RCs build the confidence and discipline needed to stay on track.
ESL is a free program open to men referred by judges, probation and parole officers, other agencies, or through self-referral. To participate, RCs must be committed to attending weekly sessions, setting and pursuing personal goals, and engaging fully in the twenty-week journey.
ESL serves RCs returning to Calhoun, Cherokee, DeKalb, and Etowah counties. Participants meet weekly with Jerry Clemons to work through their personalized curriculum, gaining not only skills and direction but also a strong support system.
