The success of a non-profit organization depends on its ability to clearly define its purpose and the need it addresses. Since its founding in 2003, Extended Family has helped thousands of families adjust to life affected by incarceration through free, solution-based programs. Our work is driven by a clear purpose: to support individuals and families through the prison and reentry experience, recognizing that strong individuals build strong families, and strong families create strong communities.
We provide educational programming for both adults and children, conduct research, and share best practices for healthy living during and after incarceration. Our mission, “To offer help and inspire hope,” is reflected in practical programs designed by our team to meet real-life needs and promote lasting change.
For children, we offer Extended Family for Kids, a nine-lesson curriculum that builds self-esteem, reduces stress and isolation, and helps them create an identity in contrast. Extended Family Leadership Academy supports older youth with job readiness, health, and communication, aiming to provide them with help as they complete high school and plan for their futures, and empowers them with skills which prevent entry into the juvenile justice system.
Adult family members can access a nationwide resource database on our website and receive guidance on navigating incarceration and reentry through one-to-one support with Extended Family staff members. Our tools and tips focus on self-care and stress reduction to help families adjust to their new reality without feeling alone.
Extended Success for Life, launched in 2024, supports returning citizens through a 20-week program focused on goal setting, life skills, and individualized coaching to reduce recidivism and promote sustainable success. We use a three-part approach, “Dream, Learn, Live,” and develop unique lessons to fit each individual’s needs.
