Extended Family is honored to provide programs and services that support families of incarcerated individuals while upholding one of our most deeply held values, “Our Purpose Is the Purpose.” This guiding principle reflects our commitment to helping families successfully adapt to a new way of life. We fulfill this value through educational programming, ongoing research, and the use of best practices that promote healthy living for every member of the family throughout the incarceration experience.
The incarceration of a loved one has far-reaching physical, emotional, and psychological effects on families. Many face significant challenges, including poverty, food insecurity, and, in some cases, homelessness. Children and other family members may also experience what researcher Kate Luther describes as “spoiled identity,” a concept from her 2016 journal article Stigma Management Among Children of Incarcerated Parents, referring to the internalized stigma often felt by children of incarcerated individuals. In many instances, children may even blame themselves for their loved one’s incarceration. Our programs address these challenges by promoting healthy lifestyle choices and equipping families with the tools needed to improve their overall well-being.
Extended Family’s programs are intentionally designed to build self-esteem, reduce feelings of shame and isolation, alleviate stress, address anger, and strengthen communication skills. By remaining steadfast in our Purpose, we empower families, including children, to lead healthy, stable, and successful lives while their loved ones are incarcerated. When individuals make positive choices, they can break the generational cycles of incarceration within their families. Strengthening families ultimately contributes to building stronger, safer communities.
