Extended Success for Life (ESL) is a structured, twenty-week reentry program designed to support men transitioning from incarceration, referred to as Returning Citizens (RCs), as they rebuild their lives, strengthen family connections, and successfully reintegrate into their communities. The program delivers a comprehensive, individualized series of lessons built upon a three-phase framework: Dream, Learn, and Live.
ESL is led by Program Coordinator Jerry Clemons, whose leadership is grounded in lived experience. Having spent six years incarcerated in an Alabama state penitentiary, Jerry has remained actively engaged in his community since his release in 2009. His personal journey provides insight, credibility, and inspiration to the RCs he serves.
ESL begins with the Dream phase, during which participants identify and establish realistic, meaningful goals. These foundational sessions encourage RCs to envision a future centered on purpose, responsibility, and personal growth. Based on these goals, Jerry develops a customized lesson plan tailored to each participant’s individual needs and aspirations.
During the Learn phase, participants focus on acquiring the practical, emotional, and life skills necessary to achieve their goals. Through interactive instruction and guided activities, RCs discover personal strengths, cultivate new skills, and develop healthy coping strategies to manage stress and emotions constructively.
The final phase, Live, emphasizes application and accountability. Participants receive ongoing individualized support, resources, and encouragement as they implement their plans in real-world settings. This phase reinforces resilience, discipline, and follow-through, empowering RCs to sustain long-term success.
ESL is offered at no cost and is available to men referred by judges, probation and parole officers, partner agencies, or through self-referral. Participants must commit to weekly sessions, active engagement, and the completion of the full twenty-week program.
The ESL program serves Returning Citizens in Calhoun, Cherokee, DeKalb, and Etowah counties. Participants meet weekly with Extended Family staff to work through their personalized lessons while benefiting from consistent mentorship and a strong support network.
