Extended Family for Kids (EFK) and Extended Family Leadership Academy (EFLA) exist to empower school-aged children with the coping skills, confidence, and life tools they need to thrive in their schools and families. Each session is led by trained Extended Family staff, caring adults who are deeply invested in the success of our students.
Our mission, “To offer help and inspire hope,” is made possible through a combination of grant funding and generous civic, community, and private donations. These vital contributions allow us to reach children who face significant challenges and ensure our programs remain accessible to those who need them most.
A cornerstone of our model is meeting with groups during the school day. By partnering directly with schools, we remove common barriers such as transportation and additional caregiver responsibilities. School administrators, counselors, and staff work closely with our team to identify participants and provide meeting spaces.
In addition to meeting in schools, we also lead EFK and EFLA groups in juvenile diversion programs. We are committed to helping justice involved youth recognize the power of their choices and to embrace the EFLA motto, “Lead Yourself,” the idea of overcoming the past and pursuing a life of success, regardless of their current circumstances.
Community involvement is central to what we do. One of our most impactful lessons – Cops! – brings students and law enforcement officers together in a positive, supportive environment. These interactions help dispel misconceptions, build trust, and foster healthier relationships between young people and their communities.
Guest presenters also play an essential role by supporting Program Leaders and sharing their professional experiences to inspire students. Over the years, we have connected children with a wide range of professionals aligned with their interests, professionals who reflect our students’ interests and aspirations, including elected officials, coaches, business owners, and local artists.
Together, Extended Family staff, donors, school partners, law enforcement, and community leaders are united in helping students get from where they are now to where they want to be in life. Through engaging lessons delivered weekly, our programs provide meaningful guidance that supports students’ emotional growth, decision-making, and long-term success.
Working with our partners, we help prevent students from entering the justice system and promote safer, stronger families and communities. To learn more about our programs, please visit www.extendedfamilyhelp.org. Together, we are changing lives, one child at a time.
