Extended Family is a community-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting families impacted by incarceration. Our mission, “To offer help and inspire hope,” inspires us to reach those who are navigating the difficult realities of having a loved one in jail or prison. We strive to provide support to family members who face the daily challenges that incarceration brings.

When their loved one is incarcerated, children often carry feelings of shame, confusion, or guilt, and may experience stigma from peers and their communities. Extended Family seeks to create a safe, supportive environment of understanding, guidance, and encouragement.

One of our core values is “Relationships Come First.” We demonstrate this commitment in every partnership we form and every program we deliver. We believe that strong, trust-based relationships are essential to meaningful support and lasting change. Because incarceration affects every community, we collaborate closely with local partners to reach families who need assistance most.

Our evidence-based programs are designed to strengthen families and improve outcomes for children who have an incarcerated loved one. We connect with youth through strategic partnerships with schools, juvenile diversion programs, juvenile courts, and community organizations. Through these collaborations, we are able to identify and support children who may otherwise lack access to the resources and guidance they need to thrive.

Ultimately, our work is guided by long-term goals that extend beyond immediate support. We aim to help prevent at-risk children from entering the juvenile justice system, reduce recidivism among youth offenders, and break the generational cycle of incarceration that affects so many families. When families are supported, children are given the opportunity to build healthier futures, and communities become safer and stronger for everyone.
