Extended Family’s program for older students, Extended Family Leadership Academy (EFLA), is built around the student-chosen motto, “Lead Yourself.” This motto reflects our goal – to help students get from where they are now to where they want to be in the future. EFLA focuses on three main areas: health and wellness, job readiness and interview skills, and effective communication. By strengthening these skills, students gain the confidence they need to set goals, build strong relationships, and succeed in their communities.
One of the most popular parts of EFLA is career exploration. Students share the qualities of their “dream job” and we invite professionals from those fields to speak with them. These guest speakers talk honestly about the challenges they faced, how they overcame them, and the lessons they learned. Students also have the opportunity to build meaningful connections with these community leaders. Some students have even received job offers through these connections, and one aspiring writer became a regular columnist for a local newspaper after meeting an EFLA speaker.
EFLA also helps students prepare for life after high school with our annual Shopping Spree. Each year, seniors participate in a sponsored shopping trip to purchase professional clothing for interviews and work. Students receive funding for outfits, shoes, and accessories, helping them feel confident and prepared as they pursue employment or higher education opportunities.
In addition, students learn how to complete job, college, and scholarship applications. We guide them through the process step by step, including gathering important information, requesting letters of recommendation, and writing thank-you notes. Seniors who complete the Extended Family Leadership Academy Scholarship application are automatically considered for financial support that can be used for college, community college, or a technical program of their choice.
